Side effects to meds

"Side effects from medications!!
I’ve recently suffered an episode of raised liver functions & a respiratory illness where I was coughing heaps, struggling to breathe- GP treated symptoms - we thought it was a viral thing.
However, within a week, I was extremely breathless on any exertion (even tooth brushing) & exhausted!
A trip to hospital, many tests & follow up, has revealed the possibility of Interstitial Lung Disease.
I’ve taken Methotrexate for 3.5 years since PsA diagnosis then Rheumatologist started me on Arava as well 9 months ago to help control pain.
I’m reading that both these meds can cause ILD but rheumatologist says - it’s rare & doesn’t want me to cease either of the meds. I’ve ceased Arava myself as I honestly felt like I was dying. I’m changing rheumatologist & looking at other options for medications.
I’m all for lowering pain but not when I’m killing myself with toxic meds.
I know there are risks with all of these meds but I need to find something that works for me. I’m now facing a new lung disease that has no cure!
Has anyone else had issues with side-effects?"

  1. Hi @cazmac! You must be beyond frustrated. With so many other PsA medications available, I am surprised you current doctor has not switched your medications. Why take the chance that they will make your Interstitial Lung Disease (pulmonary fibrosis) worse? I hope your new rheumatologist is a better partner in your care. Here is an article about the treatment guidelines for PsA that might help you get a conversation going with your next doctor: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/treatment You are not alone in your diagnosis. Here is a forum post from another member with the same issues: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/forums/fibrosis. 1. Thank you so much for support & the links. It was a scary episode - this is a new diagnosis of lung disease as a rare side effect from Arava. I had excellent lung function prior to this episode, so I guess dr thought I would be fine. I am supported now by my GP in ceasing Arava & helping me to look at alternative medications.
GP admitted that he did not know about this possible side effect.

He is referring me to another rheumatologist to help sort my ongoing treatment plan.
He will monitor my lung function & repeat chest X-ray in a few months & praying damage is minimal or will heal.
      Thanks again
