Is this a sign of psoriatic arthritis bumps on my hands?

The bump on the middle finger has remained there for as long as I can remember and The last small finger bump I remember developing in my late teens. I have done a MRI on my wrist and no sign of RA activity was noted on my wrist despite my wrist and fingers aching. I am really scared of my ankle spondylitis having developed to my hands and I don’t know what to do with these lumps. I don’t think it can possibly be osteoarthritis either because I would have been way too young to have developed it.

Most notably none of this has caused any stiffness on my fingers. I have trigger finger in both thumbs but that seems to be an inherited issue my mother and grandfather had/have.

I am scared my hands are going to become deformed.

  1. Hello , I can hear your concerns about your symptoms in your hand, especially when you're already managing other chronic conditions. We are not doctors and cannot make a diagnosis or give medical advice, so can not determine if your symptoms are PsA. We do have an article with information on symptoms of PsA in the hands that I will share with you here, https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/clinical/affect-on-hands

You mention RA, so I'm wondering if you are diagnosed with RA? Do you have a rheumatologist? If not, you might want to consider seeking the knowledge of a rheumatologist who specializes in conditions like RA and PsA. (Here is more information about the specialty of rheumatologists too, https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/clinical/rheumatologist)

While I wish that I could more specifically ease your worries about your hand symptoms, I do hope some of this information was helpful! Please, if you're comfortable, keep us posted and let us know how you're doing and what you find out.

Wishing you a gentle day. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. I have those little nodules on some of my joints as well. And I’ve been told by my rheumatologist that they are due to my PsA. Can’t remember the exact mechanism behind them though.

    1. so. I may have PSA effecting my hands by now? Honestly I don’t know how to feel about this. I’ve been a lot in denial because I’ve never experienced true classic morning stiffness problems that has caused issues of flexibility or grip strength loss, only just pain and discomfort. The only thing I held onto was that my wrist mri scan showed both tendonitis effecting my thumbs causing trigger thumb on both. No synovitis

    2. also the one nodule on my middle finger is more likely a writers bump more than anything because I have had it for so long as long as I can possibly remember being alive. Not sure if I clarified that in this post. But my pinkie finger one seems very concerning

  3. Ethan, PsA typically affects the hands predominantly for many of us. The best advice I can give is to continue following your rheumatologist’s treatment plan, and keep living your life as you have been, though you may find you’ll have to adjust you pace from time to time.

    1. Oh , my heart goes out to you! I can hear what a scary, discouraging, and challenging time it's been for you, especially with this newest symptom of left-sided numbness. Have you reached out to your doctor about this newest symptom? It certainly is important to get checked out, if you haven't already. Unfortunately, autoimmune conditions do sometimes like to "collect" (ie, once you've been diagnosed with one you have a higher likelihood of developing another). That being said, there are so many treatment and medication options nowadays. Getting an autoimmune diagnosis today doesn't mean the same thing for a person as it did even twenty years ago. And, they are always researching and coming up with new treatments as well, so there is hope that there will continue to be treatments that bring people relief. Of course, I understand that this doesn't necessarily help you in the exact moment that you're in, but please know that this community is here for you, and don't hesitate to advocate for yourself! (Also, as you mention MS, I wanted to link our MS community in case you're interested, https://multiplesclerosis.net/) Getting an autoimmune diagnosis as twenty-two years old is a lot, both physically and mentally, but you can still live a long and full life. Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    2. I don’t want to think that something sinister like MS is something that I am probably developing and it’s more likely nerve irritation issue from spinal issues that have been dealing with for so long because I have spondylitis AS issues that can cause exactly this, and also the odds of me developing MS as a male, especially at this young of the age is extremely rare. I have yet to see someone in my case, have this cluster of autoimmune diseases at this age of me, it also doesn’t help that MS can be worse in men. I’ve already been been in down so many times with anchylosis spondylitis. I don’t need another more sinister disease to develop to continue to beat me down further I don’t need this in my life at this point in time I don’t need it. I don’t want it. I’m trying to rationalize this in a way that seems more logical. And the more logical sound of mine points to nerve compression issues rather than something neurological going in my head. I do know that MS causes a multitude of issues that stem from issues that are unique to its own. There’s mostly no defining issue that makes MS unique most MS related issues can be caused by other unrelated muscular issues ones that can be rooted in nerve compression or just general anxiety induced. I don’t want to believe that. A cluster of the worst autoimmune diseases to ever exist at this young of an age so I tend to remain levelheaded and think rationally. As I continue to try to be proactive and make appointments with neurologist and rheumatologist, and all that stuff one of them, I have successfully made an appointment with, but the former I haven’t because for some reason, my doctor didn’t schedule a neurologist appointment despite telling him I’d want to get a referral to see one and I don’t know why. All this to say I am beyond stressed and I think the ironic part is this is all happening within the fall season.
