Getting off crutches

I have been on crutches for 15 months due to a huge flare up and now I'm feeling a bit better thanks to Cosentyx. I've started using one crutch but leaving both of them is very painful, both in my muscles and in my joints. I also feel insecure, because I've lost a lot of balance and I feel like I'm going to fall down. I've started doing very simple exercises, now that I'm able to, but the progress is naturally slow.
Have you ever experience anything similar? Any advice?

  1. First of all, , I just want to commend you for taking care of yourself, using the crutches when you've needed to, and continuing to utilize the tools (one crutch) in order to keep yourself more comfortable - or keep yourself less uncomfortable at least. While I don't have personal experience with this, I think it's great that you are doing what you can and okay that the progress is slow.

Have you been able to talk with your doctor at all? I'm wondering if they would have additional exercises for you to do to help you feel more comfortable and balanced. I also wanted to share this article from one of our health leaders about using a mobility aid, https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/living/no-shame-using-mobility-aids.

Hopefully some of our community members can also share with you here about their experiences. I am wishing you continued strength, relief, and success with the crutch(es). Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Hi , I just wanted to follow up with you. How has the last week or so been? Have you noticed any change in comfort or balance level? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    2. I'm still so so. But I keep walking with only one but it's not easy to walk with none. I'll keep trying!

  2. I had to walk with a cane for quite a while early on before being diagnosed. It required fairly long period of physical therapy to get back to being able to walk without use of an assistive device, and continued exercise over the years to maintain strength and flexibility.

    1. Thank you for sharing your experience!
