Learning to L.O.V.E. Yourself
Did you know that you have the right to advocate for yourself? People with medical conditions need to fight for themselves. It is true. Working with your medical team is necessary. If you do not advocate for yourself, who will?
Fighting for yourself can be hard. When you have a chronic condition, it is best to learn as much as you can. You will have a good idea of what your journey may look like. This way, you will know what to expect. When you know, you can help make decisions with your team.
Using L.O.V.E. to navigate your care
Having 2 or more conditions myself, I have found it necessary to L.O.V.E.:
- L: Learn
- O: Openly discuss
- V: Value myself
- E: Encourage others
I did not know these things in the beginning. Now, I share them with other people. Advocating along your health journey helps you to love yourself with direction.
L: Learn about your health
At the start of your journey, it can be overwhelming and even scary. Asking questions of your doctor is a great way to start out. Find out if there is a safe place where you can learn more. Often, there are websites to find details. Asking your doctor will help you find sites with reliable facts.
Finding out that there are other people in your position is meaningful. In many cases, there may be a support site where you can meet others and share. Knowing you are not alone is comforting. Being able to relate to someone else can help with anxiety.
O: Openly discuss everything with your team
Your next step is to be open. Tell your doctors about what you feel. Do not keep things to yourself. One of the top issues doctors encounter is people not being honest or open. If you have a question, ask it.

V: Value yourself and your goals
Value yourself! Value your needs and goals. Remember: this is your journey. Doctors, family, and friends all have opinions. But you are in control. If you are unsure of something, ask. If you like how things are going, tell your doctor.
E: Encourage others on their path
Encouragement will come when you are more comfortable with your care. Knowing you are helping yourself will make you feel great. You can then turn around and encourage others. Sharing your journey can be a great way to heal. Your mental health journey is as important as the physical one.
What makes me so sure? I have been on this 30-year journey, and I will continue on it. As you journey, you will meet people who become like family. Just remember to love yourself!
