Thanksgiving Day Versus My Psoriatic Arthritis

I love the holidays. Cooking big meals for my family to enjoy and enjoying them being home. However, my psoriatic arthritis is not conducive to being on my feet for hours while I am cooking all that food. This Thanksgiving was different for me. My children are scattered in different areas of Louisiana, and they have families of their own. None of them were able to come on Thanksgiving. That meant for the first time in a long time my husband and I would be alone for turkey day. If it had been that way in the past, it would have really gotten me down. For whatever reason that was not the case this time. All I could think was well my body will thank me for it later.

How did we spend our Thanksgiving?

Believe it or not since family was not coming my husband and I decided not to do the traditional meal of a turkey and all the fixings. I had bought a turkey. My husband had pulled it out of the freezer, but we were not certain it was completely thawed. For this reason, we chose to put steaks on the grill. Sometimes things work out without you really knowing it at the time. More on that later. I cut up potatoes for us to have roasted potatoes with it. It was an easy meal that turned out wonderful. It also freed us up where we could continue to work on a project that had already been started.

What home project did we work on?

We have had an ongoing project for quite some time. Little by little we have been remodeling our house. This time our project was remodeling our bedroom. It started with removing two windows and replacing them with a single insulated window. The day before Thanksgiving my husband started putting new paneling up in our bedroom since we had to remove old paneling to get those windows out. As I write this, we still have more paneling that needs to be put up to finish the project. Hopefully that will happen this weekend. I am excited that this project will be another thing we can take off our list.

How was Thanksgiving day easy on my psoriatic arthritis?

This all might not sound like a typical holiday. I get that. However, it was the best holiday for the two of us. Most of the work was on him to do with me helping when he needed it. It put little to no strain on my body which meant no real impact on my psoriatic arthritis. That turned out to be a really good thing as we got word late that afternoon that one of our sons would be coming home the next day to have Thanksgiving dinner with us. Remember that turkey I said we had started defrosting? Well, little did we know when we changed to cooking steaks that the turkey would be in demand the following day. It’s a good thing my psoriatic arthritis had a break because the next day would test my body to the max.
