Woman lying on her side as a hurricane moves through her body

My Psoriatic Arthritis Met A Hurricane

Unless you are not one to listen to the news, you have probably heard of Hurricane Laura by now. Living in Louisiana one gets used to hearing about hurricanes. After two female named storms impacted Louisiana fifteen years ago by the names of Hurricane Katrina and Rita such a topic makes you pay attention.

Hurricane Laura has caused widespread destruction. Not only for the coastal areas but for a large part of Louisiana including where I live. Why would I write about it on this website? The effect it had on my psoriatic arthritis has been incredible.

Weather & psoriatic arthritis

I have written a couple of articles about the weather affecting my psoriatic arthritis symptoms. Barometric pressure always affects my psoriatic arthritis. I was expecting that to be the case with Hurricane Laura coming.

Usually, by the time a hurricane comes inland the land starts causing it to rapidly lose strength. That was true with Katrina and Rita. Hurricane Laura had to be her own situation.

The eye of the monster was supposed to come right through the town I live in. Well as luck would have it she veered a bit so it was not a direct impact. However, the winds were still a category 1 so there was damage here where I live. As you can imagine the body pain that came with it was just as bad. It was something I had never experienced before.

The pains of a hurricane

The bands of rain hit us long before the hurricane did. I could feel the difference. My body started to hurt. Maybe it was the stress of going through a situation. Stress is never a good thing. My body felt heavy and tight.

Add to that my husband and I trying to make sure our pets would be taken care of along with other things to get ready had my back hurting. Later as I lay in bed my legs started hurting as well. Having restless leg syndrome I am kind of used to it but in this case, it felt different.

Fast forward to the hurricane approaching and my body was gripped in pain. The pressure the hurricane brought with it made my body hurt more and more. I swear my ears are ringing from it.

Don't take symptoms for granted

Sometimes we just have to go through situations to learn to not take things for granted. Now that I have had this experience with a hurricane, I will never take for granted a small rainstorm again. I thought my body hurt when a rainstorm approached. Boy, was I wrong.

The pain I felt from this hurricane makes a rainstorm pain seem like a walk in the park. I am one of the lucky ones too. Why is that? Other than some limbs down we had no damage to our house. My bed was waiting for me so that maybe my body could try to relax. I pray I never experience another hurricane.
