New Psoriatic Pain, Same Old Story
When I first started writing for this company it was almost a year ago. One of the first stories I turned in was on predicting the weather when you have psoriatic arthritis. You see, my grandfather used to tell us how he knew a storm was coming by the way his body felt.
Understanding PsA
Until I developed psoriatic arthritis, I could not understand it--but boy can I now. If my grandfather was still alive I would tell him how much I understand it now. I can hear him: "Sugar I am glad you understand but I don't like the fact that you hurt like that either."
Boy do I miss that man, but this is not what this article is about. Last night gave a whole new meaning to my body hurting and truly made for a miserable night.
Rain and new psoriatic arthritis pain
For the past week here in Louisiana, we have had rain every single day. The same is true for today and tomorrow. So far it had not been bad until last night. Sitting outside earlier in the day it was so humid. Spring and summer storms seem to be the worse for us because of the heat.
The more heat, the more the storms intensify. It started thundering around 6 P.M., so we knew the storms were way off in the distance. However, by 8 P.M., the thundering was getting louder, so we knew the storms were getting closer. By 10 P.M., the storm was right over the top of us.
Heavy thundering and heavy lightning so close you would think it was in the back yard! I had already gone to bed before this time. I was already experiencing the pain as soon as I laid down.
Trying to find comfort
So what is this new psoriatic arthritis pain I speak of? It was centered in my left hip. I had never had pain in that hip before. My right hip, yes, but not in the left hip. What makes this even more surprising to me is that I am on a muscle relaxer that I take daily.
It had been an hour since I took it before I went to bed. That left hip pain should have not been there. It did not matter on which side I tried to lie. Right, left, or even on my back--that hip kept hurting.
Pair that pain with the heavy storm we had last night and it definitely makes for a night of misery and very little sleep. It got me wondering while I laid there in pain if the storm had brought on this new situation.
Did the storm bring on my new pain?
I truly did expect the pain to be there when I woke up this morning. To my surprise, it was not there nor has it been there. Thinking back on last night, I had to look up the weather and psoriatic arthritis reacting to change. It was just as I had expected.
Some sites say yes, the changing weather could impact it while other sites say there is no direct link to it. All I know is that the pain was not fun or even bearable. I would hate to think that now both my hips are going to hurt although that would just about be my luck honestly.
I guess I will find out tonight when I go to bed. Almost makes me scared to think about it. I hope like that storm is gone that the hip pain will be gone as well never to return.
Does the weather bring new PsA pain for you?
At this point, I cannot really draw a conclusion on whether I think the storm had anything to do with my new psoriatic arthritis pain. Do you, as the reader, think it does? Can you feel a major difference when the weather turns bad like the heavy rainstorm we had last night?
I will be eager to see your responses to this. Is it something that more studies need to be done on to see if this is a real concern?
Maybe if enough of us think it does play a part then it should be studied more. The only problem I can see with that would be that it would be a hard one to study based on weather.
