New meds

Since I got diagnosed I've been prescribed Methotrexate with Gabapentin, then with Prednisone, then Humira with Prednisone, after that I had to wait to get medical help and when I did I was prescribed Cymbalta, so far none of them worked most of them had bad to serious side effects and Humira had no benefit or side effects, now my doctor prescribed Lyrica, I just started taking it so I'm hoping that this will work but the list of side effects is concerning and the list of meds that can't be taken with is long (not that I care to take any of them anyway) and I wonder the effects of taking this long term if it's even possible, I just hope to find something that will let me do the things I enjoy without making things worse like the other meds, without meds I hurt all the time and it gets worse as the day goes by but at least I get out of bed and do my daily routine, has anyone experienced any benefits or bad effects from taking it?

  1. Hi . I have no experience with Lyrica, but I have seen only one post in this community about negative effects. This article is from one of our advocates who experience muscle weakness, a rare side effect: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/living/mobility-aids. It took her a while to figure out Lyrica was the cause. Is Humira the only biologic your doctor has tried? Finding the biologic that is most effective for you can be a game of trial and error. Doctors have no way of knowing what will help which patients. The good news is that the next biologic you try might do the trick even though Humira didn't touch it. Lyrica might help with your nerve pain, but it won't slow the progression of your PsA or reduce your inflammation. Here is a list of medications used for PsA: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/medications. If your doctor won't give other PsA medications a try, you might want think about getting a second opinion. I hope this helps and that you get relief soon. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thank you for your input, at this moment my doctor is trying to attend my Fibromyalgia and then he’s going to focus on my PsA, most of my problems are my extremities and chronic fatigue since so far I had bad luck with the other meds he just wants to make sure, I have read from many PsA sites to be patient and to accept that it is a trial and error, I’m just scared of some of the side effects that are on its list.

    2. Hi . The side effects certainly can seem scary, but it is important to remember that not everyone will experience them. You do always have to carefully weigh the benefits against the risks when take medications for PsA. I hope you are able to get your fibromyalgia symptoms under control soon so you can begin focusing on your PsA. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hello , This is a "GREAT" article. It's something I never bother to talked about. I have been on medications since 1963. I have been on every medication that you could probably think of. It seems like they all have some kind of side-effects. We are all different and have different reactions to medication. When I was on Lyrica, I did have a few side effects, but overall it did work. I don't want to scare you away, this might be a great one for you. Like said, it is trial and error. Been on 8 biologics in 20 years. Make sure your doctor is "hearing" you. Good luck on this journey and thanks for sharing. Diane (Team Member)

    1. Diane T, thank you for your reply, many of the meds that I’ve taken have left me with either a serious migraines or a feeling of hangover that it felt even worse with my constant dizziness and mild vertigo and the last pill I just couldn’t get out of bed, I spent more than half a day without the energy to do anything and being in bed with insomnia for that long made my joints sore even more, I don’t expect a miracle cure I’ve come to accept my new normal, even before I was diagnosed I couldn’t take pain meds, the over the counter gave me acid reflux and didn’t take the pain away and the strong prescription meds side effects I experienced I was trading one pain for another that left me deciding if they were worth taking or deal with my kidney stone pain (I chose the pain) I always had bad experience with medication in general that why I’ve become scared anytime I start a new one, even the ones that worked only did for a short while. Thank you again for listening, it helps to have different inputs and ideas but sometimes knowing that someone’s listening does help even more.
