Jogging and a brace?

Hi everyone,
I have a question or looking for a suggestion. I will ask my doctor on next visit. I try to do a little bit of jogging on my treadmill. I have a dream of doing a 5k race. But once I start, my rib cage, spine and chest area feels almost like it's collapsing. Then I can't expand my lungs enough so I have to stop and just walk slow. Is anyone aware of a soft type brace that might help? Thank you ❤

  1. Hi . That is an excellent question and I am glad you plan to ask your doctor about this. There are two conditions common to people with PsA that can cause that kind of pain. Here is an article about them: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/answers/chest-pain-costochondritis-tietze-syndrome. This might sound strange, but some members of our Facebook community say they have found relief using corsets. I am not sure how comfortable those would be for running, however. I am glad you are feeling well enough to consider a 5K race. The beauty of 5K road races is that no one cares how fast you complete the course or whether you have to walk sometimes. The road racing community is incredibly supportive of everyone. I hope you complete one and that you have a blast. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. I see, . You saw the nurse practitioner in the practice, not the rheumatologist. I hope you don't give up and that you try another practice. You might need to go on disability someday and that diagnosis will be important. Do you know anyone else locally who has PsA and would recommend a particular doctor? In the meantime, a trip to the dermatologist sounds like a great idea. If nothing else, the biopsy results can help point a rheumatologist in the right direction. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

    2. I don't know anyone else with this but I will maybe think about trying another doctor in a month or so. Thank you and take care!

  2. Thank you!

    1. Hi, I don't know if this is still an issue for you since so many months have passed, but have you tried training on the elliptical? I can't run due to joint pain but I have been using the elliptical to do cardio. So far it has been really great. You could also supplement with swimming since that is full-body, low-impact exercise. Let us know when you run that 5k!

      1. Hi , thank you for writing. Unfortunately I have gotten much worse and so have been struggling. I have 2 goals for this week and one is to clean and lubricate the tread on my treadmill. I feel like I'm just going to have to start from scratch again. My left ankle is becoming very stiff and my neck that had the surgery is constant pain. I know now that actual running will never get done but the best I can hope for is to do some walking and it will have to be on the treadmill. I appreciate you writing!
