Experiencing nail symptoms and thickness in skin, but no psoriasis?

I have thickness in my skin, nails are falling off my toes, and pitted nails but no scum psoriasis is that common?

  1. Hi ! I replied to you in the Q&A section, but I will reply here as well. It is not unheard of to have PsA without psoriasis. One of our advocates wrote this article about that very topic. Do you also have joint pain? If so, do you have a referral to a rheumatologist? If not, a dermatologist can help you with the skin and nail issues. I hope this helps. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hi, I started of with Osteoarthritis from the age of 11. I was told that my Nan and grandfather on my dads side were both in wheelchairs and always knew I was following in my grandparents foot steps. After hip replacements and a knee, I have now been diagnosed with PsA. I have ridges on all my nails, have had lost a couple of nails but still no Psoriasis. My mum had Psoriasis as did her mum and some of her sisters. My Consultant asked about my family and did anyone have PsA. My consultant told me it was in the genes. But still no Psoriasis.
      Thanks for reading.

      1. I have ridges in my nails and have had extremely mild psoriasis behind my ears and into the back of my scalp for decades. It has never spread and even at it's worst it was never like what my mom gets. She has severe plaque psoriasis and has had it since she was 9. My grandfather also had psoriasis similar to mine meaning it was very mild and easily controlled.

I was just diagnosed with PsA six months ago but looking back, I believe I've had it since my late teens.

I do hope that I never have to experience what my mom does.

        1. I have some lines in my nails otherwise nothing. No signs of PsO. But was diagnosed with PsA 6 months ago. I'd say I've had it for a number of years, just been masked by the large amount of ibuprofen I was taking daily.

          1. , we appreciate you sharing here. I have the lines in my nails too, alongside quite a few other nail symptoms and psoriasis. It's interesting how both similar and different we all are! So many of us go on to realise that we've had this disease for much longer than we/our doctors thought. How's everything been since your diagnosis? Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator
