Methotrexate and sleepwalking

Apart from occasional night terrors where I end up running out of my room or fighting imaginary enemies in my sleep during a nightmare, I have never sleep walked.

I have been taking methotrexate for about 3 months and my dose has been double for the last couple of weeks. I noticed I was sleeping more restlessly than usual. I am single so don't share my bed and would wake up to find my doona the opposite way than when I went to sleep. Then I found I had rearranged my pillows in my sleep. The other morning I woke up and found that the cage on my pedestal fan near my bed was open. I must have done it in my sleep as no-one else comes in my room and opening it requires unclipping four clips around the cage, so it couldn't have happened accidentally! It's winter here and I probably only open the cage to clean the fan blades about once every two years, so I found it very strange I would sleep walk to do that. I'm starting to worry what else I might do in my sleep!

Has anyone else developed sleep walking due to this medication?

  1. Hi . Methotrexate can cause restlessness, so it makes sense that it might also lead to sleep walking. Have you talked with your doctor about this? Given the fact that sleep waking can be dangerous, you might want to consider switching to a new medication. Methotrexate is usually the first drug doctors will prescribe. It is relatively inexpensive and insurance companies often require you try it before moving on to something else. Fortunately, there are lots of PsA medication you can try. 1. Hi Lori, thanks for your response. I probably only have to take the medication for 2 and a bit months more (at least for this flare up) and it is working well with no other side effects so will stick with it for now. I haven't had any more sleep walking incidents (unless I haven't noticed). Lots of vivid dreams, but that is normal for me. If things get worse I will talk to my doctor.
