Psoriatic Arthritis & hip replacement

I’m having my right hip replaced in two months. Has anyone with PsA had a hip replacement? How did it go for you, and did you regain full use of your hip?

  1. Hi @stljan those are great questions. Please feel free to go over to our Facebook page and ask the question there as well. I am sure our great community will have answers for you. Vickie W., Team Member

    1. I have had both hips replaced due to bone on bone decay. The pain from the bones rubbing pain has gone but I have tenderness in the wound areas and have had several bouts of bursitis. If I had the choice again knowing what I know now I would still have it done. Benefits far outweigh the negatives

      1. Thanks Alexander—I can barely walk now, so I’m going ahead with it. I, too, have had bursitis around that hIp

        1. I am sorry to hear you can barely walk. I hope you find relief when the surgery is done and you fully heal. Our prayers are with you. Vickie W., Team Member

      2. I had my left hip replaced in 2017 and wasn't diagnosed with PsA until 2018. I was missing part of my bone and most of the cartilage.

My surgeon went in through the front side so there was less muscle to go through. Healing was much faster too.

My replacement was a God send compared to the pain I was in prior. I still love my new hip, but have started getting bursitis which is painful. It makes it difficult to lift my leg up to get in the car, or even putting on socks and shoes. My doc says we can do injections to help but I'm just not there yet.

I can tell you I found it difficult to sleep in bed, so I slept in the recliner for a couple weeks. We bought a sturdy shower chair to make bathing easier and a toilet seat riser so I didn't have to struggle to sit down. I kept a sturdy chair in the bathroom to aid in standing up from the toilet or to sit in when drying my hair.

Best recovery tip...WALK, WALK, WALK!!! as much as you can. I'd walk Walmart when the weather was bad, and the park when it was dry. If I got up in the night, I'd take several trips through the house. Walking is the key, because your hip/leg only moves in just a few directions.

Good luck to you and I hope you heal fast with very little pain.
