As a 57 year old athlete, specifically a long distance runner, I can say that any device used to stabilize the knee that isn't special made for you likely is going to be of limited value in providing any real measure of joint stability and/or pain relief. The standard Ace brand "brace", or any of the sleeves, provide compression, which in turn can provide some mild stability and some pain relief through restriction of motion (if that's what causes the pain). However, long term, physical therapy, and a commitment to continued mobility and quality exercise is the only solution. Even following knee replacement surgery, physical therapy is commenced almost immediately following the procedure. If you are having pain placing weight on the knee, or upon flexion or extension, despite all else, a visit to an orthotist/prosthetist, or knee replacement, may be in order. But the vast majority of one size fits all (or most) devices are useful only to remind you that you have a painful knee.
