Foot Pain

What relief have you found that helps relieve the pain in your feet??

Both my feet hurt, especially in the mornings - I walk like a 90-year-old when I first get up. Eventually, my right foot settles and is ok, but my left foot never stops. The heel always feels like it has the worse bruise ever and the front of my ankle is often swollen and painful as well. I have to be on my feet all day for work and by the time I get home I'm often close to tears.

I have to lay down with my left foot elevated and an ice pack for a while after I get home to even face my at-home work. I tried so many brands and types of shoes, insoles, etc. Luckily in my job now I wear scrubs, which means I can wear athletic shoes instead of the dress shoes I've had to wear the past 20+years and that has helped some.

Anyway just curious how you manage your feet and what kind of pain you have in your feet?

  1. Hi Austin, thanks so much for sharing your troubles with foot pain. From reading our community submissions and from seeing what advocates have had to say, it does appear having a good set of shoes is really helpful.

There are some good suggestions from Leanne, one of our advocates, on this page: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/living/foot-pain-wearing-sandals/. She also recommends taking breaks, drinking lots of water and having good compression socks. Diane, another advocate, recommends cutting toenails often and checking your feet often. She also says you should see a podiatrist. That may help if you're in particular and enduring pain.

Some go a step further and suggest use of a mobility aid. Cynthia, one of our advocates, wrote about this: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/living/three-myths-using-mobility-aids/.

Hope this is of assistance to you Austin and please do reach out with any further questions or queries - Jack, Community Moderator.

    1. My rheumatologist referred me to a podiatrist who did recommend a particular brand of tennis shoes (not sure if I can mention the brand here) as well as inserts, and she also showed me a couple of stretches for the tendons that run along the bottom of the foot from the back of the heel. These measures do provide some relief for me. Best wishes to you, Austin!

By the way, I had to put the shoes on a credit card but I was desperate. Thankfully they did feel much better than my other shoes.👟

      1. I am so glad you found relief, ! The right pair of shoes can make all the difference in the world. Thanks for sharing! – Lori, Psoriatic-Arthritis.com, Team Member

        1. I just wanted to echo what everyone said about the right type of shoes. It too me years to realize that the shoes I wore were making my pain so much worst. When I started investing in good shoes it made such a big difference. Thanks for sharing your story. Diane, Community Moderator
