Fatigue despite treatment

Hello,
New here to this community and newly diagnosed. I was wondering if others have similar experience with having fatigue on and off? I have been on treatment for a couple months which helps with joint pain greatly (and some skin improvement) but the fatigue seems only marginally better. Some days I feel so wiped out that I end up sleeping for half the day or so.

Looking forward to hearing from folks.

  1. Hi . Welcome to the community! I am glad you found us. You will find lots of great resources and supportive people here. Fatigue is common with PsA. It can be caused by PsA itself, but it can also be made worse by certain medications, such as methotrexate. Some people find it improves when or if they switch to biologics. Here is an article from our editorial team about PsA fatigues and ways to treat it: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/psa-symptoms/fatigue. Since you are new to PsA, I thought you might also appreciate this article from one of our advocates: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/psa-symptoms/fatigue. I hope you get more responses here and that you find ways to cope with the fatigue. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hello @brightzyd and welcome to our community. There are so many wonderful people here and I'm sure you will find plenty of support and understanding. Unfortunately, I have to say that ongoing fatigue, despite "effective treatment" is a common complaint and a personal arch-nemesis of mine too. My fatigue (and possibly yours) can come from a variety of places including being part of the disease itself, a side effect from the medication, or simply a storm front of weather coming thru. Or sometimes, even a delightful combination of all of them 😉
One of the most difficult parts of fatigue is deciding whether to try and battle through it or to just embrace it and let your body rest. Balancing the needs of your body with the needs of life in the real work will come in time. My best advice to is to pace yourself and find the combination of movement and rest that works for you. Over time, we all learn how to listen to our bodies, and find a pace or routine that works best for you. Be gentle with yourself as this takes some time.
Some newer biologic medicines such as Tremfya claim to help with fatigue as well, so I really believe doctors and pharmacists are doing a better job of listening to patients concerns about fatigue. Unfortunately though, it does seem to be farther down the list of concerns than joint or skin issues.
I'm sure others will chime in soon as fatigue (and our attempts to combat it) are common. In the meantime, just please remember to be gentle with yourself as you find your post-diagnosis path and remember we are here to support you in any way we can. -Leanne (Team Member)

      1. Thanks for the response. I am also on biologic and mtx but seems the fatigue still just won’t let up. Certainly learning to figure out how to pace myself.. It’s comforting to know that there are others with similar experience, esp on days when it seems like i’m not doing anything in particular to exacerbate my symptoms and yet i am still wiped out. It’s been driving me nuts not being able to pinpoint the fatigue cause, but it sounds like that may be just the nature of the condition.
