Cosentx side effects please help

Hi I have PsA and went without medication for 2 years following diagnosis due to clerical error.
Anyway I've been on cosentyx since August started on 150mg weekly for 5 weeks, now monthly. However I'm really struggling with a cold I've had with sinusitis the last 5 weeks. I do daily nasal douching, had a week of antibiotics which cleared the severe facial pain, but as I also take 100mg amytriptaline at night for severe spinal stenosis nerve pain, but this causes a really dry mouth, throat, nasal passages etc. I'm going yo try to reduce the amytriptaline, I've got a humidifier by my bed, but can anyone please tell me if the sinus and cold issues are likely to get better with time? I'm really new to this and can't take any dmards. I've also had 2 lots of oral steroids and getting checked for asthma now, on top of this thrush 3 times.
Any advice is welcome

  1. Well, sinus infections while on Cosentyx are a reality, and tough to deal with. If you're between dosings, then you can't pause it until you get over the infection. Steroids can also weaken your immune system, leading to opportunistic infections. And while they may not make your more susceptible to a sinus infections, they certainly could make it harder to kick it. My suggestion would be to contact your doctor, and have them try a different anti-biotic to try and clear it up. Also, be sure to use only distilled water, or water that has been boiled first (and cooled to room temperature) when flushing your sinuses.

    1. Thankyou for taking the time to reply, do they ever go away or will you always get sinus issues. I guess as I had a steroid injection at the start of the cold, that didn't help then 🙈 In the last 5 weeks I have this cold, I had a steroid injection as I was in a bad flare, then antibiotics, and a week of oral steroids for my wheazing, just finishing the second week of oral steroids and feel I'm just starting to sleep better and my sinuses are much better. It's just been a horrible 5 weeks

      1. I was on Cosentyx a few years ago, and never had an upper respiratory infection as a result. But, that's because I was fastidious about wearing a mask in crowds in public, or around people who had the cold or flu, and I washed my hands a lot during cold and flu season. Sinus infections occur when you get a head cold, and your sinuses cannot drain properly, leading to a bacterial infection. So when you get a cold, or you have sinus congestion from allergies, it is important to keep the sinus drained. Sudafed, the real stuff that you have to buy behind the pharmacy counter with your ID, is the best thing for this. I know a lot of people who balk at using Sudafed, but you're not going to be taking it for more than about a week, so don't worry about long term side effects. Some people use Benadryl to dry out their sinuses, but Sudafed really is much better. And you can take both concurrently. Now, if you have heart issues, high blood pressure, or the like, consult with your doctor first.

    2. Thankyou, unfortunately I can't take sudafed as I'm on amytriptaline for spinal stenosis nerve pain 🙈 however otrivine nasal spray is good so I used that, then the pharmacist gave me a steroid nasal spray. I think you're absolutely right it's the steroids I just didn't even think about those 😢 thankyou
