My Getting Older With Psoriatic Disease Skincare Routine
At any age a skincare routine is important. But as we aged whether you stay at home or go out is very important. Even going to the store you need to take the time to take care of your delicate skin. Put something on it.
I am 65 ½ now and taking very good care of my skin is a necessary routine. I have had severe psoriatic disease for decades, but dealing with PsA has had its challenges on my skin. It was taking a toll on me. I’ve had to change my routine several times. The items I was using just weren’t cutting it anymore.
What part of my skincare routine has had to change?
I had to discover a new skincare routine. Gentleness and care became my priority and I had to find products that wouldn’t do me harm. Did you know there can be chemicals in creams that can affect our medications?
When I was talking to one of my doctors he told me that I couldn’t use just anything on my skin with everything that was already going on with my PsA and Pso. So using old products for my skin was not something that I found wise.
As I’m getting older, it seems my skin has become more sensitive so using products with chemicals and fragrances is a big no for me.
How have I changed my skincare products?
I have to be very careful about what I used on my face. I looked for gentle face cleansers which don’t have any harsh chemicals in them. This is something you can talk to your healthcare team about also.
Sad, but true, my skin has become more dry and flaky over the years. I have to use a moisturizer right after cleaning it. This helps rejuvenate my skin. Try to find one that promises more hydration and makes your skin feel smooth and silky.
I was a big fan of exfoliants for a while. Most of the ones I was using had harsh chemicals in them and using scrubs was not good for me. This is something to talk to your doctors about also.
I have had to use sunscreens because of my condition. Most of the ones I used were a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen or you can use any of your favorite brands.
How have my baths changed
We all know we have to do things to soothe our bodies. If you are already taking warm baths to ease your muscle pain and soothe those sore joints, this is good. If you don’t do this already, make it a part of your daily routine.
I add Epsom salts and sometimes oatmeal to my water to relax my body, but always remember that our skin is very sensitive so consult with your health care team before starting anything new.
At the end of the day, we just need something to calm our inflammation and the affected areas on our skin. I’m a big believer in working with our doctors to get the right result. So visiting your healthcare team is always a good idea in the end. We are all in this together.
