Steroid tablets to treat psoriatic arthritis

10years ago (at the age of 56) I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis . It was successfully kept at bay , apart from occasional flare ups with Sulphasalazine & Hydroxychloroquine. Recently I have been in a lot of pain with my hands and wrists and have a small patch of psoriasis on my back. Yesterday my rheumatologist diagnosed me with psoriatic- arthritis and has prescribed an 18week course of steroid tablets . I am loath to go down that route but really need to get rid of the pain and stiffness in my hands and wrists, which is now affecting my life. Does anyone have experience of taking steroid tablets for psoriatic arthritis?

  1. Hi Christabelseven, thanks for reaching out. While I hope our community members will chime in with their personal experiences, I am sending over an article from one of our advocates with her experience with prednisone. Is that the steroid your rheumatologist is recommending? I am also sending you over an article that I hope will help since you have just been diagnosed. It offers some good advice. I wish you all the best and hope that you can get some relief. We are here for you, come by our community at any time to share or just to vent. Jill, Team Member

      1. Hello , I started to have symptoms of PsA at the age of 25 but didn't get diagnosed until I was 50. I was on prednisone for a few months along with a biologic. The pain got so bad that the biologic couldn't handle it. Once the pain got to a manageable stage and I was feeling better. I was taken off of it. This was about 3 years ago. I do remember that it worked pretty fast and I had to be tapered off of it. I felt really different when I was on it, like a good feeling. I hope this information helps some. Let us know how you are doing on it. Diane, Commumity Moderator

        1. Prednisone has been a very helpful tool in my PsA treatment. The mood effects have been my biggest challenge with it, but my spouse and I have done a lot of working through how to handle those situations. I have been on both tapers and daily dose, with daily mostly being during med changes.
