parasitic infections?

What happens to people on Biologics that suppress the immune system (Tremfya two years) contract an intestinal parasite(s)?
I had two separate stool tests performed prior to being put on Tremfya and both came back negative.
I have taken two rounds of Pyrantel Pamoate as recommended by my
GP and my pharmacist but I am still having symptoms and also seeing them in my stool.
I am scheduled and cleared for laparoscopic surgical
removal of my gallbladder next week.
I cannot find anything whatsoever online regarding this topic
(MayoClinic, Cleveland Clinic, Web MD,
Healthline, Pubmed or CDC).
It's as if parasites are the white elephant in the room. And as many know, if you insist that you think the negative test results were wrong, your medical recods get stamped with "Parasitosis".
Can anyone please help. I am very concerned.

Any help, advice or suggestions welcome.

Thank You
Mary

  1. Hi . I am not familiar with biologics and parasites, but I wanted to bump this up a bit in hopes of getting some responses. The community might be a bit slow this weekend because of the holiday and I didn't want you to feel unheard. You must be incredibly frustrated. I am a bit surprised your doctor didn't take you off your biologic until the parasite was gone or at least prior to surgery so you can fight off any post-surgical infections. In doing some light research, I found this study about an asthmatic patient who was on biologics and contracted a parasite: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6912087/. I thought it might interest you. There were several other articles that popped up when I did a Google search for "parasites biologics." If you are nervous about having surgery with continued symptoms of a parasite infection, you might want to be a little more insistent about talking with your doctors about it. It's in everyone's best interest to ensure that you are, without a doubt, healthy before surgery. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Update, post-op 5 days.
My cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) went well and there were no complications.
The last dose of medicine I took must have cleared my system of them. Not a single sign or symtom since.
Gallbladder surgery is nothing to take lightly, but I've had worse. My lower chest and belly have four holes from the laparoscopic procedure and I'm sore and bruised a bit but I can tell there is an improvement in my digestion already.
Thanks to everyone that prayed for me and gave suggestions. I truly appreciated your input.

    2. Thanks for updating us, . I have been thinking of you. I am glad the surgery was successful and I hope your recovery continues to go well. Sending the best of all wishes for a much better 2023 ahead! - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi @girly_hedge_hog if your procedure is after Tuesday you can contact the Patient Navigation Center at The National Psoriasis Foundation at www.psoriasis.org where you can talk to a person and see if they might have information on parasites and biologics. Good luck on your procedure. Vickie W., Team Member
