Frozen Elbow?

Hi, I recently was diagnosed last year with PSA after numerous visits to an orthopedic, my GP and then finally a Rheum Dr. The catalyst for me going was my right elbow being "Frozen" and unable to extend straight (30 degrees immobile as of now). Has anyone else experienced this and if so, did any therapy or biologics work? I am currently experiencing only mild symptoms with 2 of my fingers on opposite hands relatively swollen and stiff and only using NSAIDs. My job is in the aviation industry and I fear the use of biologics and certainly Methrotrexate and Sulf. The side effects of those alone would prevent me from flying any longer so for now am in an incredible crossroads of treatment options. Thank You

  1. Hello @CommunityMember2503. I can definitely understand your resistance when it comes to your job. It must be an awesome job to be a pilot. I have had a finger that gets stuck from time to time but not an elbow. You are more than welcome to go to our Facebook page at psoriatic-arthritisdotcom and ask your question there. I am sure you will get great responses from our community. What is your doctor saying about it all? Is there something they can do to correct the elbow without those meds? Vickie W., Team Member

    1. Thank you for your response. I have visited two Rheumatologist's in the past year and was soured by their treatment options and the lack of listening to my concerns. The first did not acknowledge my concerns for side effects and they both initially and almost forcefully suggest I start Otezla immediately without any discussion of my career and how the side effects of that specific medication can impair my ability to work. I am 51 years old and have plenty of "flight" left in me and it seems most of these dr's continue to push pharmaceuticals, specifically newer ones like Otezla. I have already taken Methotrexate and Sulf off the treatment list because of the side effects. I was never offered Physical Therapy options nor any type of cortizone shot remedy for my elbow or finger. The lack of compassion has turned me off. Very Frustrated.

      1. Hi . Your frustration is definitely justified. It's disappointing that they haven't given you other options. Have you considered seeing an orthopedic doctor? An orthopedic doctor will likely suggest therapy, a cortisone injection or both. Surgery might also be an option if it is simply a matter of releasing the joint. Similar surgery on fingers is usually successful with an easy recovery. I understand why you don't want to take medication now, and I greatly appreciate it as someone who hops on a flight now and then, but I hope you consider biologics when you retire to slow the progression of your PsA in those post-retirement years. For now, but here is an article about some natural approaches for pain relief hat might interest you: https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/living/natural-pain-relief?fbclid=IwAR3ugVOCbesKWoNfmw5icnoeI_BtMv5L9w9WnUIt98VeYR85NJ1fKx4JbzQ&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=organic. I hope this helps and that you are able to continue flying for many years to come. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
