Does Having Psoriatic Arthritis Caused Costochondritis?

Well first off, what is costochondritis? In short definition, it's inflammation of the cartilage which is connected to the ribs. So what does this have to do with PsA? If you have PsA you can experience sharp, aching, or pressure-like pain. You might not even know what is going on with you until you see a doctor.

Has anyone ever been diagnosed with costochondritis? If so, did you have to start a different treatment plan? Diane (Team Member)

  1. Yes, and it sucks! I've not had an attack of costochondritis since being on biologics, but it was one of the symptoms that never seemed to be relieved with NSAIDs and standard DMARDs.

    1. Hello , We certainly have an illness that keeps on giving. I have had these symptoms, but have never got a diagnosis for that. I will ask my doctor about this. Thanks for sharing some of your journey with us. We learned so much from each other.

I do have one question, did your doctor bring this to your attention? How did you know ut wasn't a symptom from having PsA? I find this so interesting and how so much can get missed. Diane (Team Member)

      1. I actually had suffered from it off and on for about a year or two before diagnosis of Psoriatic Disease. But at the time, I was lifting weights, and my doctor thought that therein was the cause. And he wasn't off base, as this is a condition that can come about from such activities if one is not careful. Just like any other part of the body; you put too much stress on it, it's gonna hurt. And doing bench press puts a lot of stress on that area.

    2. i have been thinking i am having a heart attack with th chest pain under my heart area since 2018, i went thru many tests, never heard of this costochondritus

      1. Hello , You went through a lot with this. Glad you are doing better. I've had pains in the chest, but not so bad that I had to be hospitalized. Thanks for sharing some great information.

      2. I just wanted to share a link to an article with more information about costochondritis, https://psoriatic-arthritis.com/answers/chest-pain-costochondritis-tietze-syndrome. While it's always good to get any chest pain checked out by a doctor, it is possible that chest pain is due to this inflammation of cartilage in the chest. Please don't hesitate to bring this up with your doctor, especially if you're still experiencing this pain. I hope that helps! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    3. never heard of that either, thankyou

      1. Hello , It's always something - isn't it? Have you been diagnosed with PsA or know someone with it? Thanks for replying. Diane (Team Member
