The Various Faces of Support

Whenever we go through things in our life, in fact, even just going through life, support can make all the difference. When big things happen, we often expect extra support from those around us.

But what exactly does support mean? Like most things in life, we all have our versions of what these types of things mean to us.

What does support look like?

What I have learned is that there are many versions or perspectives of support. Often our loved ones or people within our circle do not know what kind of support we need.

I hope this helps provide some perspective and ideas on how to give and get the support that you need.

Medical support

Having a good medical team behind you can make all the difference when you are faced with living and managing life with psoriatic arthritis.

  • Find a doctor that listens to you. Make sure they are aligned with your treatment expectations.
  • Listen to your doctor and do your share in the journey. You have to put the effort in.
  • Do not be afraid to contact them when you have questions or concerns.
  • If you are unhappy with your treatment, speak up.

It is okay to change doctors if you are not happy with the care you are getting from your current medical team. They are service providers who are there to help you with a very serious matter.

Household support

Having help around the house can make a big difference. Particularly on the days when your body is tired and sore. Having help with a few things around the house can have a big impact. Do not be shy in asking for help.

  • Help with household chores
  • Making of dinner that is healthy and heart-friendly.
  • Help with grocery shopping.
  • Assistance in the garden.
  • Have someone drive you when you are not feeling well.

Your people will not always know how you are feeling. More often than not they will be happy to have something constructive to do to help you.

Emotional support

Emotional and mental health support, I feel, is often pushed to the back burner. Keeping your mental health in check is vital. Having the emotional support of the ones around you is helpful. Here are some more tips on how to get the support you need in this area.

  • Talk to a friend who does not judge and is there to support you.
  • Reach out to a counselor or therapist.
  • If you have no access to a therapist, speak to your GP and see how they can help you.
  • Join an online support group of people who are going through the same thing as you. You will feel welcome and understood there.

It can be really difficult to find the courage and strength to talk to someone, especially when you already feel like your imposing so much. I promise you - not only does it get the thoughts out of your head, but it will also strengthen the relationships you choose to open up to.
