Tell Us You Have PsA Without Telling Us You Have PsA: The Fatigue Effect

The trend “Tell us without telling us,” or “tell me without telling me” allows people to make pointed statements that play with stereotypes, defining characteristics, and the opportunity to share inside jokes.

As unique as psoriatic arthritis can be, we asked our Facebook community, "Tell us you have PsA without telling us you have PsA" The responses were overwhelming and we've noticed some consistent themes, so much in fact that we're creating an article series to play on the great shared topics.

Next up? The fatigue effect. We've already taken a look at the tin-man-like stiffness. Then we shifted focus and talked about the emotional toll of maintaining an invisible illness. Oh yeah, we've covered it all.

So, tell us

The fatigue that people with PsA have is real and it interferes tremendously with daily life. If you live with fatigue from psoriatic arthritis, we don’t have to tell you what it feels like. However, hearing from other people with PsA who are also wrestling with this nagging, persistent feeling of exhaustion can help you feel less alone. Here is what a few of those with PsA had to say about the fatigue effect...

"I feel like I need a crane to pull me out of bed"
"Never feel rested"
"I am so fatigued I need to lay down almost as soon as I get up"

Tips to manage fatigue

Chronic fatigue can be a daily occurrence for those with PsA and can be an incredible challenge, sometimes even surpassing the primary symptoms of the condition such as joint pain or stiffness. If you’re waking up each morning without energy, here are a few tips to get you through the day.

  1. Improve sleep hygiene: Create a relaxing bedtime routine, eliminate screen time close to bedtime and make sure you're thermostat is at a comfortable temperature.
  2. Light movement and gentle exercise: Exercise can help fight fatigue including reducing inflammation, increasing endorphins, preventing deconditioning, and improving sleep.
  3. Mindfulness: Now this can mean many different things. Using a meditation app, going for a walk, or simply doing something that you love. Prioritizing your self-care can increase the ability to stay in contact with the present moment regardless of unpleasant thoughts and bodily sensations (including fatigue)
  4. Communicate: Managing fatigue requires a well-rounded approach that may include your medication regimen, managing your mental health, and making other healthy lifestyle changes.

Connection in community

While all of this is a comical and light approach to what life with PsA can entail, we know there is so much more.
How can we get loved ones to understand the impact of pain? Are we able to push through this, or should we just rest? If we choose to rest, how do we push past the guilt? And do not even start on the overwhelming treatment options and doctor relationships.
